Job Description:
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIESRegulatory1. Direct the
day-to-day functions of the nursing activities in accordance with
current rules, regulations and guidelines that govern the
hospital.2. Ensure that all nursing personnel, RNs, LPN, MHTs, are
following their respective job descriptions and scope of
practice.3. Monitor for survey compliance and participate in the
development, maintenance and implementation of the facilitys
quality assurance program.4. Participate in survey (inspections)
made by authorized governing agencies.5. Interpret the departments
policies and procedures to personnel, patients, visitors, and
government agencies as required.6. Make daily rounds on the unit to
ensure that all nursing personnel are performing their work
assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards. Report
findings to the Director of Nursing.7. Review documentation to
ensure it is informative, descriptive of the care being provided,
and reflective of the patients response to care.8. Monitor
medication passes and treatment schedules to assure that
Medications are being administered as ordered and that treatments
are provided as scheduled.9. Report problem areas to the Director
of Nursing. Assist in developing and implementing corrective action
plans.10. Ensure that all R.N.s and L.P.N.s are following policies
and procedures for administration, storage and control of
medications and supplies on each shift.11. Complete quality
improvement audit tools assigned. Staffing1. Participate, with the
Director of Nursing, in determining shift staffing requirements.2.
Ensure that the appropriate number and type of nursing staff is
available for the current shift and the following 12 hours.3. Is
aware of census and acuity and makes staffing adjustments
accordingly.4. Assure that daily nursing care meets or exceeds the
needs of each resident. Communication1. Conduct staffing huddles
and review and participate in shift reports at the beginning and
end of shift.2. Keep the Director of Nursing informed of the status
of patients and other related matters.3. Meet with patients, and/or
family members as necessary.4. Consult with physician group in
planning patient care, treatment, discharge plans, etc., as
necessary.5. Alert Director of Nursing about changes in patient
condition and/or changes in acuity.6. Assist with the investigation
and completion of Self-Reports, incident reports, and patient
complaints and grievances. Direct Nursing Care1. Accept patient
assignment during times of short staffing and/or high patient
acuity and is responsible for providing the nursing care delivery
system and supervising the clinical programming during assigned
shift.2. Provide direct nursing care as necessary and ensure that
the nursing care provided remains compatible and reflects the ANA
standards for psychiatric-mental health service provision.3.
Perform other work related duties as assigned.4. Complete assigned
paperwork.5. Work all hours of duty as required.6. Assess, plan and
implement emergency care as needed.7. Receive and document
physician orders for patient care, medications and treatment.8.
Participate in the development and implementation of a written plan
of care (preliminary and comprehensive) for each patient, that
identifies the problems/needs of the patient, indicates the care to
be given, and goals to be accomplished.9. Review plan of care for
appropriate patient goals, problems, and updates based on nursing
needs.10. Perform physical assessments and document in the medical
record, notifying the physician and/or family of changes in the
patients health. Safety and Stewardship1. Monitor shift personnel
to ensure they are following established safety regulations in the
use of equipment and supplies.2. Ensure that nursing work areas
(nurse stations, medication preparation rooms, etc.) are maintained
in a clean and sanitary manner.3. Ensure that all patient care
rooms, treatment areas, etc., are maintained in a clean and
sanitary manner.4. Ensure that only trained and authorized
personnel operate the departments equipment in a safe manner.5.
Oversee new hire preceptor program and ensure that staff are
trained appropriately. Problem Solving1. Use the problem solving
process to promote conflict resolution among Nursing employees.2.
Monitor incidents and the need for further investigation,
intervention, and follow- up.3. Monitor and assess restraint and
seclusion usage. SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:1. Must be proficient in the
use of oral and written skills in the English language and must
possess communication skills which make the Clinician understood
easily.2. Must possess the ability to make independent clinical,
personnel, and administrative decisions when circumstances warrant
such action.3. Must possess the ability to communicate tactfully
with personnel, patients, family members, visitors, government
agencies and other departments.4. Must possess leadership and
supervisory ability and the willingness to work at all levels of
nursing care.5. Must possess the ability to plan, organize,
develop, implement and interpret the programs, goals, objectives,
policies and procedures, etc., that are necessary for providing
quality care.6. Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition and
enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult
patients, employees and visitors.7. Must function independently,
have flexibility, personal integrity and the ability to work
effectively with patients, personnel and other departments.8. Must
have physical dexterity and ability to utilize electronic and
